  Dr. Michael Cohn

Dr. Michael Cohn earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Fuller Graduate School of Psychology in Pasadena, California. He completed a multiculturally-focused pre-doctoral internship with a specialty track in Men’s Issues at the University of Oregon’s Counseling and Testing Center. His postdoctoral fellowship included specialized training in Emotionally-Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), at Maine’s largest private group psychology practice, Psychology Specialists of Maine.

In his work with clients, Dr. Cohn leans into an attachment orientation. Practically speaking, an attachment orientation uses Emotionally-Focused Therapy, an evidence-based therapy that blends humanistic, psychodynamic, and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) theory and technique. Emotionally-Focused Therapy explores ways in which a person’s past and present are in a constant dance of meaning-making within oneself and in relationships with others. Attachment research is growing rapidly and offers solid results for Emotionally-Focused Therapy across a broad spectrum of psychological and relationship concerns.

Dr. Cohn is an LGBTQIA+ affirming therapist who creates a safe therapeutic space through curiosity, compassion, humor, and unconditional valuing of all who come to therapy. One of the great privileges of providing therapy, for Dr. Cohn, is seeing clients’ goals grow and change as they gain a clearer understanding of themselves and what matters to them. In his work with couples, Dr. Cohn has witnessed many moments of vulnerability, understanding, and compassion, leading beyond de-escalation and toward increased intimacy and caring for the most tender parts of one another.

In his personal life, Dr. Cohn likes the idea of being a person who reads extensively, but he is more likely to catch the blockbuster movie or binge watch a television series than to spend hours reading the books. He enjoys hiking and camping with his family, spending time at the beach, pool, lake or Sound, and playing with his Havanese dog, Sam.
